Monument to the discoveries

Located next to the Tagus, in front of the Belém Tower and with its back to the 25 de Abril Bridge, this huge monument is 52 meters high, erected in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Enrique El Navegante (also known as Infante de Sagres), one of the most prominent figures of the beginning of the 'era two descobrimentos'.

The monolith (called in Portuguese Padrão dos Descobrimentos) shows the statues, carved in stone, of the most important personalities of maritime discoveries: sailors, royal bosses and all those who participated in the development of such an important company. On the floor, next to him, a huge map shows the routes drawn by navigators during their trips.

It is possible to enter the interactive museum, which brings us a little closer to the history of Portugal, and whose entrance also gives access to the top of the construction.
